| Lunch is one of those words that, the more you look at it, the stranger it seems: lunch, lunch, lunch, lunch, lunch, lunch, lunch. See what I mean? Lunch can be a verb – We lunched at Sheffield’s, or a noun – Have you had your lunch yet? A person may be handed their lunch, both literally and figuratively, with the same being said of those who are “out to lunch”. But more important is the fact that lunch can be the most pleasant and enjoyable meal of the day. Lunch is the time to recharge your batteries in the midst of a hectic work day, or lunch can be the kick-off to a day when no more work related responsibilities are on the agenda. What better way to start a holiday than with the traditional, “Let’s meet for lunch”? Lunch is great first date material; you’ve got all kinds of outs - I have to get back to - - -fill in the blank. With a lunch date, the stress of the alternative night out on the town is diminished considerably (plus you get to see your prospective partner in full light and with, presumably, not much to drink, allowing you to avoid all kinds of potential complications). There’s the classic, though endangered, three-martini business lunch, the faintly disparaging lunch enjoyed by ladies of a certain age and means. There are lunch meats, lunch carts, and even those eponymous business establishments which both are and serve lunches – We had lunch at Earl’s lunch. And then there’s the epitome of the mid-day meal, the great culmination of all that lunch is and aspires to be, the Latin-world custom of the siesta; an excellent meal followed by a couple hours of rest. There are those countries rumored to be considering eliminating the siesta in pursuit of greater productivity. One can only hope those rumors are in error. What’s the point
of this contemplation? Sheffield’s is open for lunch, every day
at 11:30. Plan your next lunch in the beer garden, under the shade. August’s
beer of the month is Goose Island Summertime, and every time you order
one you’ll be entered in a raffle for a Schwinn Goose Island Summertime
Beach Cruiser. So make it a leisurely lunch, with a couple
of Goose Island beers, and then consider a siesta. We’ll see you
soon. |
Join us at Ravens for Cocktails and Conversation everyday till 4am (5am on Saturdays)! • $3 draft special - all day/everyday. Beer Garden is now open - weather permitting. Hope to see you soon! |
In 1813 John Brady published his Clavis Calendarium, a collection of historical quotes and anecdotes in which the dog days of summer are described as a time when - "the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies." At the Silver Cloud, we're creating "phrensies" of our own with the Lazy Daze Summer Cooler created by our very own Bethany, just $5 all month long. So put your dogs up and enjoy one. Speaking of putting your dogs up, August 15th is National Relaxation Day, and we're kicking back with our tribute to the bad old days of leisure suits and Studio 54 with Quaalude shots for $4. Just make sure you don't nod off at the bar. The 28th we’ll be celebrating the release of Aesop Rock’s new CD, None Shall Pass. You can hear the title cut here - Aesop Rock Blog and you can hear the entire album right here at the Cloud. Be on hand for Goose Island 312 Beer Specials and free CD’s. Rounding out the month’s celebrations is our nod to National Toasted Marshmallow Day on Thursday, August 30th (we don’t make these up, I swear). We’re featuring our famous S’Mores for just one thin dime, but at that price it’s just one per customer. Then there’s the list of everyday specials that keep you coming back for more: Sunday - $2 off Big Bottle Beers, Monday - $3 Miller High Life bottles, Tuesday - $2 Sloppy Joes and $2 Cans, Wednesday - PB & J special (Pabst Blue Ribbon and a shot of Jameson for $6), Thursday - $5 Well Pints. And before you know it we’re into Labor Day. So get
out there and enjoy what’s left of the summer and then get yourself
over to the Silver Cloud. |
