Just who, exactly, are these people who stand in line outside the Best Buy at two in the morning, fighting with their neighbors for the chance to spend hundreds of dollars on something that will be sold for half price the day after Christmas? And who in their right mind would venture out on “Black Friday”, braving crowds and traffic and weather, simply for the opportunity to rack up more debt on their Visa? Maybe some subtle twist of DNA has rendered me unable to appreciate the enjoyable nuance of those acts of madness, but my opinion of the perfect Friday after Thanksgiving is one that involves turkey sandwiches, beer, a couch and football. All the elements, of course, that make Sheffield’s the perfect place to escape the frenzy - except for maybe the sofa.

Beer you know we’ve got. And though the Bear’s shot at a Super Bowl repeat are as slim as the chance of scoring a parking meter along the Magnificent Mile in December, the football season enters the playoffs, and thoughts of those big post-season paychecks inspires some really great gridiron action, which you can follow on our new plasma screen TV’s. We’ve even got the NFL network so that you can catch all those Thursday night games you can’t get at home. So once the turkey’s picked over and the pumpkin pie is down to crumbs, trade your divan for a bar stool and get over to Sheffield’s for some holiday cheer. Our daily lunch specials are just the thing to perk you back up if you insist on fighting your way through the mall, and at only four bucks, every Monday through Friday, you’ll have plenty of cash left to finish off your shopping list.

Then there’s New Year’s Eve. If your plans for the big night are still uncertain, may we suggest our spectacular New Year’s bash? We’ve got two events that each, alone, are a fabulous deal, but we’re also offering a combo package that will make the annual fête something to remember long after the silly hat is gone.

First off all there’s dinner, so that you’ve got a solid foundation for the long night ahead. We’re offering a four course feast starting with crab cakes or sausage crostini, followed by clam chowder, cream of potato soup or salad, a main course of New York Strip, Grilled Salmon or Pasta and finishing up with crème brulee or bread pudding and fresh fruit. Dinner includes a glass of beer or wine and a champagne toast with dessert. All that for just $45, served from 7 to 9.

Then, once we’ve got the tables cleared, the real party begins. From 9:30 to 1:30 AM, we’ll have an open bar with appetizer buffet, party favors and champagne at midnight. Four hours of all you can drink fun for $65 a head.

But the big deal is combining the two - sign up for dinner and the party and you pay just $90, $20 off the individual package price. Where else can you find a deal like that? You can sign up with your server or bartender, send an e-mail to contactsheffields@yahoo.com or call our party line @ (773)281-1350. Just do it today and check New Year’s Eve off your to do list once and for all; at least for this year.

So forget State Street and Michigan Avenue; do your shopping online and then get over and celebrate with us this holiday season. Sheffield’s is what good cheer is all about.

Join us at Ravens for Cocktails and Conversation everyday till 4am (5am on Saturdays)!

• $3 draft special - all day/everyday.

Hope to see you soon!

Yes it’s holiday time again in these United States. With all the controversy surrounding the proper manner in which to express good wishes for this most festive of seasons, it’s with some trepidation that we extend our hopes that you and your family will enjoy a happy and healthy celebration of the year’s end. Merry Christmas is out; too religious it seems. Happy Hanukkah or Merry Kwanzaa aren’t universal enough to be generally appropriate. The new standard seems to be Happy Holiday’s, which covers most of the bases, and meshes well with America’s proclivity to endorse the generic and bland. So please accept our best wishes for a Happy Holiday season, and if that somehow offends someone in some way; please wait until January to bring it up.

Sandwiched in between the flag ship holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but in keeping with the theme of caloric excess, is of course, National Hamburger Day, December the 21st. At the Silver Cloud we would no sooner neglect burger day than we would fill an orphan’s stocking with coal. We’ve put together an impressive menu of two-fisted treats, but they’re all built around a half pound of pure Angus beef. Whether you opt for the Southwest, Chili, Buffalo or Cuban, the only one who’s not going to leave the party happy is the cow.

And speaking of parties, the biggest party of the year comes along just when there’s no more year left to party in. At the Silver Cloud we’ll help you ring out the old and welcome the new with a New Year’s Eve dinner that is cause for celebration in itself. Our New Years Eve Dinner package is $24.95 per person and that includes choice of entree (Prime Rib, Diver Scallops or Cider Chicken) plus an appetizer, salad, dessert and a 1/2 bottle of wine or champagne. For an additional $5.95 you can add a lobster tail to your plate. This event usually sells out quickly, so give us a call (773-489-6212) and reserve your seats today.

Of course after New Year’s Eve comes the day itself, and while you might have an afternoon of television and recuperation planned, there’s no rest for us here at the Cloud. We’ll serve our renowned brunch from 10:30 am - 4:00, with dinner to follow. And in keeping with the festive nature of the day we’ll feature a champagne fountain where you can create your own mimosas as long as you’d like, until the specter of those looming credit card bills recedes like the ghost of Christmas past.

Anyway you look at it, this is a time to connect with friends, old and new, and to give thanks for your blessings. At the Silver Cloud, we’d like to thank all of you for making every year something to celebrate.
