The Greek philosopher Heraclitus famously said “Nothing endures but change.” At Sheffield’s we’re living proof that the old boy was onto something; things are changing around here faster than George Bush spends money. We’ve done a lot of work so far and more is yet to come, but it’s all done with one goal in mind – to make Sheffield’s a more comfortable and interesting place for our customers. If a corollary is that you all spend a little more time here, well we’re not going to complain.

One big change that’s coming soon is the introduction of our boutique beer bar, Deep in the Heart of Sheffield’s. Operated by our very own Beer Dudes, (check out their MySpace page here: MySpace.com) - Deep in the Heart of Sheffield’s, will be a place to find beers and brewers that no one else in Chicago will have. They plan to host a regular rotation of beer education classes, tastings and events, all designed to make beer more accessible to those of you think a beer is a beer is a beer, and more interesting to those who’ve hoisted a stein or two in their day. Opening sometime in May, the Beer Dudes will be holding court in the café bar – straight back from the main room. We’ll see you there.

On the 15th, at 7 PM, we’re hosting Sheffield’s Annual Craft Brewers Social, a night of beer, brewers and food that’s open to the public for just $25 bucks a head. Be on hand to meet the guys behind your favorite brew and to sample some of their handiwork that won’t be available anywhere else.

We’re working on the beer garden too; more staff, more beer tubs, more places to perch on a sunny afternoon. We’re working to make sure your Sheffield’s experience is as pleasant as possible, even after a Cubs game on a Friday. We’re adding windows, touching up the paint and giving the place a good scrubbing down. So pardon the dust, it will be over soon and better than ever, we promise.

We’ve also taken a serious look at our menu. Yes, of course, the Barbeque’s still there, and it’s still pretty darn good. But we’ve added some lighter dishes for the summer and expanded our sandwich line to make it easier to find something to grab when you’re on the run. Hummus, Sliders, Taquitos and Specialty Burgers and it doesn’t stop there. Check out our menu on our web site, or better still, stop by and check it out in person.

We’re bringing back Ladies Night Wednesday’s - manicures and $5 Cosmo’s, along with some specialty TV for your entertainment. The lineup’s still in the works but we’re always open to suggestions. And on Mother’s Day, Mom eats free with a party of four or more and we’ll have manicures available that Sunday to make Mom’s special day even more special.

Think we’re done? Not even close. We’ve added daily specials, like our $5 lunch deal and our $15 bucket of bad beer and wings. And every Saturday and Sunday we open at 10 AM for a buffet brunch.

There’s more to tell but no more space to write it in. If you want any more details you’ll have to stop by and see for yourself. Until next time, get out and enjoy the spring and let’s go Cubbies.

Join us at Ravens for Cocktails and Conversation everyday till 4am (5am on Saturdays)!

• $3 draft special - all day/everyday.

Hope to see you soon!

May has always been a month of transition. With roots that go back to the ancient Roman Empire, May first was long a community celebration of the new planting season and a time to do some special pre-planting voodoo to ensure a proper harvest. Mayday was especially popular in medieval Europe, morphing into a fertility rite where the young people of a village would sneak off into the woods for a little spring fling, none of them too worried about who they did their flinging with.

Of course, that all came to a screeching halt when the Christians got a hold of the reins and started putting their collective noses into everybody’s business - no more spring flinging for you. American’s, with our Puritan roots, were late to the party. We never really got into the idea of Mayday at all, other than putting up poles for kids to dance around. Which is a tad ironic when you consider that the initial purpose of the May Pole was to facilitate exactly the kind of casual hook-ups that polite society was trying to sweep under the rug.

Still, even without the prospect of a rural midnight romp, May’s a big month for Chicago. By and large, May means that we’re done with snow for the year, although on May 11th, 1966 a scant amount was registered (Thanks, Tom Skilling). No snow and more sun means that Chicago gets off the couch and out of doors and there’s no better place to enjoy the weather than on the Silver Cloud’s sidewalk café.

Springs also has been likened to a symphony, and on May 13th, the Silver Cloud will host a CD release party for Chicago’s own NYCO, the founding member of which is an ex-Chicago Symphony percussionist. We’ll have CD give-aways and specials and we’ll play cuts from the bands new release, Realize (www.nycomusic.com ).

We all look forward to Memorial Day, the first big weekend of the summer. You probably have Monday off, but at Silver Cloud another man’s holiday is the time we get to work. We’ll extend our famous weekend brunch for an extra day, serving it up on Monday the 26th from 10 until 4, followed by our no less famous dinner menu, of course.

And nothing heralds in a Chicago summer like burgers on the grill. Wednesday the 28th is National Hamburger Day and we’ll have variations of that savory sandwich all day, check in later for details.

It’s been a brutal winter but that’s all water under the bridge. From here on out it just keeps getting better; kind of like the Silver Cloud.
